I purchased this DeWalt hammer drill approx. 2 years ago and consider it a robust drill that can stand hard use without any issues. Battery life is more than adequate, but best to have a spare battery handy if used for more than a routine household task. I also use Mikita power tools and consider DeWalt and Mikita power tools to be of comparable (excellent) quality.

I love the drill. In hammer driver mode it went through solid concrete block like a knife through butter. Unfortunately, I’m giving this 2 stars because the battery charger did not work. I’m in the process of trying to get a replacement, but it does not sound like it will be an easy return process. I will update my review after I’ve completed the charger swap-out.A online chat with Amazon simply told me to to do all the troubleshooting things I had already tried. Then they said I would have to contact the company directly. I was fearing the worst–take the charger to the dealer downtown (30 min drive), or mail the bad charger to a service center (at my expense). Fortunately, the experience was quite the opposite. After no reply to my online message to DeWALT, I called them this morning. They were very helpful and said they would send out a replacement charger right away. I upgraded my review from 2 to 4 stars because of that good customer service. I’m looking forward to getting a working charger.

The drill has a lot of power and the batteries last for a long time. I have used it a lot for fasteners. I had no complaints, until I recently used the drill to put holes through aluminum and steel. It appears that the drill is using the hammer function even when in drill mode. The hammer function is only supposed to be active when the hammer drill setting is used. I can feel it pulsing in the metal and if I stop drilling before the hole is through I can see the chatter in the finish of the metal from the cutting edge of the drill. That finish should be smooth. I got the same result with multiple drill bits. This condition would most likely not be noticeable while drilling wood.I’ve been a machinist for 25 years and I know a thing or two about drilling holes in metal. These are high quality bits that I’m using as well.I’ll keep the drill as I need a hammer drill. But I guess I’ll be buying the regular drill version of this drill for drilling metal.

This drill is an absolute beast, I primarily use it for ice fishing to power an ice auger, at first, I would bring both batteries just in case, now, I don’t even think about bringing the second battery. I can drill holes in 12” of ice all day long, and not even worry about it. Milwaukee fanboys should take note on this drill, the torque is insane. If you want to use as an ice auger, this is about as safe as a bet as it gets, and frankly, as an ice auger, this is the best test of a drill’s ability. Any other use is minuscule imo.

This is a revised review of this drill kit.The first one I got had what was apparently a faulty charger which got very hot smelled like burning insulation and did not properly charge the batteries. It was very dangerous and could have started a fire with the battery in it which was seriously not good and very dangerous.A burning 20 volt 5 amp hour lithium battery is a seriously unpleasant prospect. However I elected to exchange it with Amazon for another new one which they sent overnight and it works fine. The charger just gets warm, not hot and charges the batteries quite quickly.I love the brushless drill itself and the power of it’s 20 volt 5 amp hour batteries. The batteries last longer than I do and driving over a hundred 2 1/2″ Simpson clip screws left the battery still showing a full charge. It would have fully discharged my smaller Bosch which would have struggled with this sized screw. The Dewalt did them very quickly easily and efficiently ion the middle of its two speeds much faster and easier than my little Bosch. It probably weighs twice as much as my Bosch, but that is a good thing, the extra mass , especially of the battery does a great job of countering it’s considerable torque making it much easier on my wrist and actually allowing me to operate it comfortably and effectively without the add on handle. On the Bosch my wrist would be very sore by now.So, one star off for the first bad and dangerous charger, but if you make sure your charger isn’t over heating, you should be fine, if it is, send it back to Amazon, they probably sent you my old one.One of the other reviewers gave it one star because the battery was loose in the drill, mine is a little loose (wobbly) too, but fully secured and it works fine, so what. The electronic clutch is really nice, you can precisely set it to seat a heavy screw without stripping it.I have now also purchased the compact saber saw and circular saw for this wonderful 20 volt 5 amp system and the saws are extremely powerful and fast.Second charger and third battery came with circular saw kit I have, so now back up charger and 3 batteries.I will be getting more tools in this series as well.
